Historical Context & Origin Region: England Material: Engraved laid paper with hand-coloring, gilt wood frame, glass cover Period: Circa 1780–1800 Description This rare and finely preserved 18th-century hand-colored engraving features an illustrated musical pastoral titled “Disappointment: A Pastoral.” It combines both visual and lyrical artistry typical of the late Georgian era. The piece consists of engraved sheet music and lyrics, overlaid with elegant calligraphy and adorned with a hand-tinted vignette of three figures in pastoral attire—a common romanticized theme in Enlightenment-era art and literature. Pastorals were poetic and musical compositions celebrating rural life and love, and this example, numbered “(182),” may have been part of a larger songbook or anthology. The style, figures, and sentiment are consistent with the genteel domestic music culture of late 18th-century England. The engraving is mounted in a vintage gold-toned mat and housed in an early to mid-20th-century gilt wood frame. The back retains the original framer’s label: Picture Framing – Restoration – Gilding – Hand Carved Mirrors, 939 Victoria Square – Montreal. Features - Hand-colored vignette with three pastoral figures - Engraved musical score with lyrics and calligraphy - Numbered “(182)” indicating inclusion in a bound collection - Period-appropriate gilt wood frame with vintage mat - Protective glass cover with intact framer’s label on verso Cultural Significance This piece exemplifies the fusion of Enlightenment aesthetics, printed music culture, and decorative arts in Georgian England. It would have served as both entertainment and interior adornment in a cultured household. Today, it bridges visual art, music history, and 18th-century societal values, making it a delightful addition to collections of historical engravings, early music, or Georgian ephemera. Condition Excellent antique condition with vibrant hand coloring and clearly legible musical notation. Light toning and age wear are visible along the edges, consistent with age. The frame and mat show only minor wear. Professionally framed in Montreal during the mid-20th century, with the wire hanger intact and ready to display.
