Historical Context & Origin Region: United States Material: Brass, glass, and oak wood Period: Circa 1925 Description This fine marine compass was produced by the legendary American maker E.S. Ritchie of Boston, renowned for his precision nautical instruments. Housed in a beautifully dovetailed oak case with brass fittings, the piece features a dry card compass encased within a gimballed brass ring. It bears the serial number 27216 and is marked with the maker’s name, ensuring authenticity. What sets this example apart is its provenance: this compass was originally mounted on the personal bridge deck cruiser Argossy, belonging to the Honourable Louis Orville Breithaupt, who served as the 18th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario (1952–1957). A notable figure in Canadian public life, Breithaupt came from a prominent German-Canadian family with deep industrial and civic roots in Kitchener (formerly Berlin), Ontario. Before his vice-regal appointment, he was the Mayor of Kitchener, a Member of Parliament, and President of Breithaupt Leather Company, one of the leading tanneries in Canada at the time. The Argossy, his elegant bridge deck cruiser, was a fixture of Ontario’s lakes during the mid-20th century. Outfitted with the finest equipment of the time—including this very compass—it embodied both sophistication and progress. The yacht often hosted dignitaries and guests during Breithaupt’s years in public life, serving not only as a personal retreat but also as a venue for diplomacy and recreation. Features - Gimballed dry card compass with floating needle - Original oak case with dovetail joinery and brass fittings - Clearly marked: “E.S. RITCHIE – BOSTON – 27216” - Provenance: From the Argossy, yacht of Lt. Governor Louis Orville Breithaupt - Includes original handwritten navigational notes beneath the housing Cultural Significance This compass represents a rare intersection of nautical history and Canadian political heritage. As both a precision navigational tool and a historically linked artifact, it holds exceptional value. Its connection to a Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and his legacy of industrial leadership and public service elevates it beyond utility—it becomes a story, a symbol of Canadian statesmanship and refinement. The inclusion of navigational notes provides a rare, personal glimpse of its use aboard Argossy. Condition The compass is in excellent vintage condition. It floats and rotates freely within its gimbal, while the printed bearing diagram remains intact beneath the housing. The oak and brass case displays minor surface wear consistent with age and use, contributing to its authentic character. No restorations have been detected. Compass Diameter: 9.25 in Age (Approximate) 101 years old Provenance Originally mounted on Lieutenant Governor Louis Orville Breithaupt’s bridge deck cruiser, Argosy.
