Historical Context & Origin Region: Persia (Sassanian Empire) Material: Bronze or brass with natural patina Period: 224–651 CE Description This extraordinary ancient ring features an intricately engraved bezel depicting a lion and antelope in a dynamic scene. The motif of predator and prey was a favored theme in Sassanian art, symbolizing the balance between strength and grace, as well as the harmony and struggle inherent in both nature and human life. Likely used as both a personal adornment and a seal, the ring reflects the cultural and artistic sophistication of the Sassanian Empire. Features - Engraved bezel showing a lion and antelope in motion - Symbolic predator-prey motif representing strength, grace, and balance - Crafted from bronze or brass with centuries-old patina - Functional as both a seal and a symbol of social status Cultural Significance The lion and antelope design reflects the Sassanian fascination with nature and symbolic dualities. Such rings were not merely decorative but also practical, used for sealing documents in wax or clay. They often carried deeper meaning, denoting power, spiritual beliefs, and cultural values central to Sassanian society. Condition The ring displays a rich green patina and surface wear consistent with its great age.
