Historical Context & Origin Region: American Southwest, likely Hopi Pueblo Culture Material: Hand-spun cotton textile with cornhusk tassel forms Period: Early–Mid 20th Century Description This large handwoven ceremonial sash is believed to represent a traditional Hopi rain sash, woven entirely from hand-spun cotton and adorned with numerous suspended twisted tassels terminating in rounded cornhusk-form elements. The textile displays a finely executed woven body with substantial length and dramatic hanging cords designed to create movement during ceremonial performance and dance. Rain sashes such as this held ceremonial importance within Pueblo cultural traditions, particularly among Hopi communities where woven ritual garments symbolized rainfall, agricultural fertility, and spiritual renewal. The elongated suspended tassels and rhythmic arrangement of the cornhusk-form knots contributed both visual symbolism and kinetic movement during ritual dances. The sash demonstrates traditional weaving techniques and retains a strong sculptural presence, making it both an important ethnographic textile and an impressive display piece.
