Historical Context & Origin Region: Europe or Colonial North America Material: Natural animal horn with wooden base plug, wooden spout insert, and leather suspension thong Period: Circa mid-18th – early 19th Century Description This substantial historic powder horn is a finely preserved example of early firearms equipment, traditionally used for the storage and dispensing of black powder. Crafted from a naturally curved animal horn, the vessel features a fitted wooden base plug at the wider end and a wooden spout insert at the tip, both exhibiting age-consistent wear and hand-finished construction. The horn displays a rich, layered surface patina ranging from warm golden amber to deep brown and charcoal tones, developed through centuries of handling and use. A faint museum or collection marking, “U-22,” remains visible on the front of the horn, strongly suggesting prior inclusion in an institutional, archival, or documented private collection. An original leather suspension thong is still present, allowing the horn to be worn or carried during use. Powder horns of this scale and quality were essential companions for soldiers, hunters, and frontiersmen throughout the black powder era. Features - Authentic historic black powder horn - Large natural horn body with pronounced curvature - Wooden base plug and wooden spout insert - Original leather suspension thong intact - Faint historic museum or collection number present (“U-22”) - Deep, honest patina with age-consistent surface wear Cultural Significance Powder horns are emblematic artifacts of the early modern firearms period, representing a time when firearms technology reshaped warfare, hunting, and daily survival. Individually crafted and often carried for years by their owners, these objects reflect both personal utility and broader historical transformation. Condition Very fine historic condition. Expected surface wear, abrasions, patina variation, and minor age-related imperfections consistent with use and age. Wooden and leather elements remain intact and stable. No modern alterations observed. Collection marking remains visible. Age (Approximate) 200–275 years old Provenance Property deaccessioned from the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, New Bedford, Massachusetts.
