Historical Context & Origin Region: Himalayan Region, possibly Tibet or Nepal Material: Leather, woven reed or cane structure, natural pigments, iron hardware Period: 19th to Early 20th Century Description This large and visually striking Himalayan storage basket is constructed from tightly coiled woven reed or cane and clad in aged leather with hand-painted decorative surfaces. The form features a fitted domed lid secured with original iron hardware and leather fastening straps, creating a robust storage container designed for transport and long-term use. The exterior retains remnants of richly colored painted decoration, including a prominent central deity figure framed within an arched motif. The figure, rendered in traditional Himalayan stylistic fashion with raised arms and halo-like detailing, suggests possible Tibetan Buddhist iconography. Additional geometric and lattice-style painted patterns remain visible across the lower body, executed in deep red, black, and ochre pigments. The basket’s substantial scale and reinforced construction indicate practical use for storage or transport, while the decorative painted surfaces elevate the object beyond purely utilitarian function. Such containers were commonly used throughout Himalayan regions for storing textiles, ceremonial objects, foodstuffs, or personal belongings during travel and domestic life. Its worn surfaces, exposed coiled structure, and heavily patinated leather contribute to a strong ethnographic and sculptural presence, making it an exceptional decorative and cultural display piece. Features - Large domed lidded storage basket form - Constructed from tightly coiled woven reed or cane - Leather-clad exterior with hand-painted decoration - Retains original iron hardware and leather fasteners - Painted Himalayan deity figure motif - Rich natural patina and age throughout - Strong sculptural and ethnographic presence Cultural Significance Decorated storage containers from the Himalayan region served both practical and symbolic roles within domestic and ceremonial contexts. Painted devotional imagery reflected religious protection, spiritual symbolism, and cultural identity, while the durable woven-and-leather construction allowed these vessels to withstand travel and mountain climates. Condition Displays significant age and use-related wear throughout, including losses to the leather covering, surface abrasion, fading to painted decoration, structural cracking, scattered holes, oxidation to metal hardware, and areas of exposed woven construction. Despite condition issues, the piece retains exceptional visual character and authenticity. Age (Approximate) 100–150 years old Provenance From a private collection in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
