During the clean out of an estate sale, I found this Confederate States of America 5 Note – February 17th, 1864. A significant piece of Civil War history, this 5 Confederate States of America Note belongs to the Seventh (and final) Issue of Confederate currency, authorized on February 17th, 1864. This series was printed during a period of hyper-inflation and represents the final monetary efforts of the Confederacy before the conclusion of the war. I am not an appraiser or collector, But with some research I was able to determine that this note is in Circulated condition. • Folds: Notable vertical center crease and multiple light horizontal/vertical folds consistent with handling. • Paper Quality: Shows typical age-toning and some minor fraying/chipping along the edges and corners (see detail in image 2). • Ink: The hand-inked serial number and signatures remain legible, though faded in some areas. No significant staining or "pinholes" are immediately apparent, though the paper exhibits some overall softening. The 1864 series was notably printed on thinner, lower-quality paper as resources became scarce in the South. Collectors value these notes as tangible artifacts of the economic struggle and the shifting tides of the American Civil War. Note on Authenticity: In the mid-20th century, many "facsimile" notes were produced for souvenirs or promotional items. Authentic notes, like the one pictured, typically feature brownish-red hand-inked signatures and serial numbers that have slightly eaten into the paper over time, rather than flat black printed ink. If the paper feels exceptionally stiff or "parchment-like," it is often a sign of a modern replica. REFER TO THE PHOTOGRAPHS FOR FURTHER DETAILS. Pickup category timeslot {A}
