He studied medical science in the late 1920's in Budapest, Hungary where he discovered he had a talent for glass blowing, making scientific glassware for fellow students and thereby creating additional income. This led to a fascination with glass and he began making artistic art deco-style glass items in his spare time. His professor at the time, sponsored Istvan on his first exhibition, launching his career as a young glass artist with exhibitions around Europe where he won a number of gold and silver medals. He moved to London in 1937 having married an Englishwoman and set up his own studios, producing work for the royal family and supplying the top London department stores.
