Vintage tintype of a Canadian Papal Zouave 
This is a vintage tintype of a Canadian Papal Zouave. It shows a soldier in a Papal Zouave (Zouaves pontificaux) uniform.
Description & Identification
Tintypes are made on a thin, dark-painted iron plate and appear as a straightforward positive image.
Subject: The man wears the distinctive &#34;iron gray&#34; short jacket with red piping and embroidery (&#34;trefles&#34;), baggy trousers, and a wide sash typical of the Papal Zouaves—a volunteer force formed in the 1860s to defend the Papal States.
Historical Value in Canada: This has significant Canadian historical value. Between 1868 and 1870, over 500 young men from Quebec (the &#34;Canadien&#34; Zouaves) volunteered to travel to Rome to fight for the Pope. Images of identified Canadian volunteers are rare and highly sought after by regional museums and military historians in Canada.
