Canada 1954 Five-Cent Coin (Shoulder Fold) This is a 1954 Canadian 5-cent coin. It features a 12-sided (dodecagonal) shape and is made from chromium-plated steel. Meaning of "Shoulder Fold" The term "Shoulder Fold" (SF) refers to a major design correction made to the front (obverse) portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. When her first coin portrait debuted in 1953, the design was sculpted too deeply. On the actual struck coins, the details of her dress completely washed out, leaving her shoulder smooth. This original, flawed design is called "No Shoulder Fold" (NSF). Later in 1953, the Mint hand-engraved the master dies to make the design shallower. This correction brought out the distinct fold lines and straps of the gown on the Queen's shoulder. Every standard 1954 nickel features this updated Shoulder Fold design. How to Verify a 1954 Shoulder Fold You can easily confirm the shoulder fold design by flipping the coin over and looking closely at the Latin text on the front side: The Key Letter: Look at the word DEI (in the phrase ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA). The Shape: On the Shoulder Fold variety, the letter "I" is perfectly straight with parallel, blocky sides. (On the old No Shoulder Fold dies, the "I" had noticeably flared, curved ends). All information provided herein is considered accurate. It is the buyer's responsibility to verify its accurateness. As shown and as is. The pictures are part of the description.
