Canada 1960 Five-Cent Coin (Bald Beaver & Weak Strike) This is a 1960 Canada Five-Cent (Bald Beaver & Weak Strike). It retains the 12-sided (dodecagonal) shape and features the classic beaver design on a nickel composition. This specific year is highly discussed among collectors due to a prominent minting phenomenon known as the "Bald Beaver." Meaning of "Bald Beaver" A "Bald Beaver" refers to a coin where the fine, textured fur lines on the beaver’s lower back and rump are completely smooth and missing. This effect can happen because of Heavy Die Polish: During production, the steel minting dies naturally become worn, scratched, or clogged with debris. Mint workers regularly grind and polish the surface of the die to extend its life. If they polish the die too aggressively, the shallowest engraved details—like the beaver's delicate fur lines—are completely erased from the die itself. Meaning of "Weak Strike" A "Weak Strike" occurs during the actual minting process. It means the coin press did not apply enough mechanical pressure when stamping the blank piece of metal (flan) between the two dies. The Result: The metal does not flow fully into the deepest recesses of the design. The Appearance: The details appear soft, flat, or faintly defined, even if the coin has never spent a single day in circulation. A weak strike often compounds the "bald beaver" appearance, making the fur texture look nonexistent from the moment it leaves the mint. All information provided herein is considered accurate.
