Theo and Susan Harlander Shallow Altered Dish • Theo and Susan Harlander were German-Canadian potters active in the mid-20th century. • Their work often features stylized, cubist figures, musicians, and geometric patterns incised into the clay. • The sqraffito work is the defining artistic feature of Brooklin Pottery, representing the primary contribution of Susan Harlander to the duo's collaboration. While Theo focused on the technical construction of the forms, Susan used sgraffito to turn each piece into a canvas for modernist art. • Based on the shape of the dish, the the way they signed the base, they piece was made in the late 1960's. • They used a distinctive red earthenware body, and used tinted slips (liquid clay) and engobes, and oxides. for their colourants. • They used an electric kiln and fired to cone 04 to 06. • This piece is marked on the base with an incised "TSH" logo, "T+S HARLANDER" & "BROOKLIN ONTARIO CANADA". • In mixed condition, There are two major breaks, and repairs, but no chipping.
