Chinese Bronze Sculpture with Crane Standing on a Turtle • The bottom has a hand written note saying China 2001, but this piece could have been made in Taiwan, Vietnam, or Japan, as ther are no "maker's marks. • This sculpture dates to the late 20th century, roughly the 1970's to the 1990's. • Symbolism and Meaning: In Chinese culture, this specific pairing of "Crane and Turtle" is called (He Gui) which is the symbol of longevity and eternal life. The Crane: Represents long life, wisdom, and nobility. It is often referred to as the "patriarch of feathered tribes." The Turtle: Represents endurance, strength, and stability. Because of its long lifespan. Together: They represent a wish for a long, healthy life and are often given as gifts for birthdays or to elders. • The weight and size of this piece strongly suggest it is a hollow-cast copper alloy, most commonly brass or bronze. • In excellent condition, no cracks, breaks or dents.
