Indonesian Wooden Bowl, with Birds & inlay Mother of Pearl • This bowl is from Lombok Indonesia. • This specific deep red/black lacquer style is often referred to locally as “Cukli" art in Lombok, which specifically describes the technique of inlaying pieces of mother-of-pearl into carved wood. • I believe this is made with Suar Wood (Rain Tree), as the bowl itself is light in weight. The wood has been stained to resemble Mahogany. • The bowl uses traditional Mother-of- Pearl (Raden) inlay technique, which involves embedding thin, iridescent shell fragments into the wood surface before applying layers of protective lacquer. • There are two stylized birds, a composition in Indonesian folk art that represents balance and harmony.
