Japanese Dragonware - Moriage Dragon Design • The style of generic "MADE IN JAPAN" marking on the back was used by numerous potteries in the Nagoya and Seto-Mino regions. • The dragon features a "moriage" decoration, a style where beads or lines of Clay are layered onto the porcelain to create a striking 3-D, raised effect. Dragonware is individually hand decorated: • Slip-Piping: Artists apply squeezed liquid clay (slip) through a tube as well as with a fine brush in layers to create the dragon's scales and body. • Hand-Painting: The "smoky" or gradient backgrounds were typically airbrushed or hand-painted to create a mystical atmosphere for the dragon. • Finishing Touches: Details like the dragon's eyes were often hand-applied using glass beads or precise dots of enamel. • Based on the "MADE IN JAPAN" on the back, this plate was produced in Japan for export, between 1921 and 1941. • In excellent condition, no cracks, breaks, or chips.
