A journalist's account of the impact of the Vietnam War on the generation that came of age during the war. Interviews with Vietnam veterans, draft dodgers, protesters, and objectors and with the families of those who died in the war or are still missing, provide a vivid portrait of the Vietnam generation. 2) Close Encounters - Mike Wallace's Own Story by Mike Wallace and Gary Paul Gates, 519 pages, Berkley Edition 1985. The senior correspondent of CBS's popular "60 Minutes," known for his no-holds-barred interviews, offers background information on his most famous interviews and explains how and why he adopted his controversial style. 3) Present at the Creation - My Years in the State Department by Dean Acheson, 1024 pages, 1st printing in Nov 1970. Won 1970 Pulitzer Prize for History. Acheson (1893–1971) was not only present at the creation of the postwar world, he was one of its chief architects. He joined the Department of State in 1941 as Assistant Secretary of State for Economic Affairs and, with brief intermissions, was continuously involved until 1953, when he left office as Secretary of State at the end of the Truman years. It was a period that included World War II, the reconstruction of Europe, the Korean War, the development of nuclear power, the formation of the United Nations and NATO. It involved him at close quarters with a cast that starred Truman, Roosevelt, Churchill, de Gaulle, Marshall, MacArthur, Eisenhower, Attlee, Eden Bevin, Schuman, Dulles, de Gasperi, Adenauer, Yoshida, Vishinsky, and Molotov.
