"A trademarked, helio-peinture of French artist JHenri Regnault 1870 painting of "Salomé", stamped on back with Berger-Levrault. Helio-peinture was a patented, cutting edge process used in the early 20th century to make copies of the Masters’ works. French printing house Ateliers Berger-Levrault, based in Nancy, France, invented the technique, which involved projecting the negative of a photograph of a painting directly onto the linen of a canvas. This “sun-painting” would capture the darker, shadowed parts of the image and provide a foundation for the new painting. Using the imprinted photograph as a guide, an artist would then apply thick oil paint and varnish to the canvas, mimicking the original as closely as possible, even down to the swirl of brush strokes. The process was revolutionary and made great classics accessible to the everyday person, but the technique fell out of use by the 1950s.
