Large wheel-thrown Mid-20th C. studio pottery charger with a shallow bowl form and an iron-speckled buff stoneware body. The interior features expressive dark-brown lattice brushwork layered with abstract floral motifs in cobalt blue, ochre, and lavender-gray beneath a clear glaze.

The earthy palette and spontaneous decoration reflect the Anglo-Japanese studio-pottery tradition associated with the mid-century Mingei movement. Incised “RB” signature and a separate impressed pottery chop mark on the underside.

About the Artist: 

Rick Strieck is a California-born, Los Angeles-based illustrator and painter whose playfully macabre work draws upon classic horror films, comic books, fairy tales and nightmares. Influenced by Clive Barker, Edward Gorey and Sam Kieth, Strieck exhibited regularly at The Hive Gallery in downtown Los Angeles from 2008 through at least 2015, including a featured installation in 2010. His work has also been exhibited at La Luz de Jesus Gallery and the Coffee Gallery, and he contributed to The Hive Gallery’s collaborative tarot project.

Large and impressive Imperial Japanese Satsuma export-ware vase dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912). Decorated with detailed polychrome panels depicting samurai and attendants, surrounded by floral roundels, intricate geometric patterns and extensive gilt decoration in the kinrande or “gold brocade” style. Cream-colored finely crackled glaze with a red painted character mark on the base. Measures approximately 18&#34; tall.

Condition: Chip and loss to the upper rim. Age-related wear and rubbing to the gilded decoration. No repairs observed. Please review photos closely.
