This rare antique &#34;fancy basket&#34; is a beautifully crafted example of Wabanaki weaving, one of the most celebrated Indigenous art forms of Eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. Hand-woven by Mi’kmaq artisans during the early 20th century, the lidded sewing basket is constructed from black ash splint and natural sweetgrass with natural dye accents. It showcases intricate decorative curls known as jikiji’j, a signature hallmark of Mi’kmaq artistry that flourished between the 1870s and 1930s when weavers created ornamental works for Victorian-era resort tourists.
