Rare Mid-Century Canadian Studio Pottery Bowl by Annelise Wade – 8" Sgraffito Owl Motif, c. 1960s This unique, hand-crafted 8-inch ceramic bowl features a detailed sgraffito owl motif in blue tones and is a beautiful example of mid-century Canadian studio pottery. Artist: Annelise Wade (Active c. 1950s–1970s) Origin: Made in Canada Period: Mid-Century Modern (circa 1960s) Material: Grogged red earthenware clay with matte slip glaze Dimensions: 8 inches (20.3 cm) diameter Overview: Offered here is an exceptional, highly collectible example of mid-century Canadian studio art pottery by renowned artisan Annelise Wade. This 8-inch stoneware display bowl features Wade's highly sought-after signature aesthetic: a deeply incised sgraffito design carved entirely by hand through a milky, textured blue-grey glaze to reveal the contrasting raw red clay body beneath. Design & Technique: The interior showcases a striking, stylized modernist owl motif, utilizing geometric sunburst patterns for the eyes and rhythmic dashing for the plumage. This narrative style heavily reflects the post-WWII Canadian craft boom and the regional folk movements of the 1960s. The bowl features a classic unglazed raw brown clay rim and base, and comes equipped with a vintage wire hanger securely threaded through the foot ring for immediate wall display. Markings: The reverse is fully authenticated with Wade's signature hand-incised markings into the red clay: the sharp "AW" artist monogram and a stylized, blocky, angular "CANADA" inscription
Dimensions: 8"
