Spring Island civil engineer-turned-potter.
Born in Turkey, he moved to Canada in

• Greyish/buff stoneware, cone 10 gas
fired in reduction. I think the handles are
&#34;extruded&#34; not pulled.
• The glaze is very fluid and works well
with the varied thicknesses.
• This piece has a late 80&#39;s feel to the mug.
• Mug #1 in excellent condition, no
cracks, breaks, or chips.
• Mug #2 in good condition, one crack,

• I have not been able to discover who
the potter is that made this mug, but
believe they are from BC.
• The various colours in the clay were
achieved by adding various oxides or
underglazes to the white stoneware clay
as you see in the pulled handle.
• Multi coloured clay with a clear glaze on
top, fired to cone 6 in an electric kiln.
• Nice thumb rest on the pulled handle,
and thin even walls, so a skilled potter.
• There is a chop mark at the base of the handle.
• In excellent condition, no cracks,

crossed the border into Turkey.
• Their Turkish division explicitly partners
with local workshops that employ, house,
and care for these refugees as a way to
support their families.
• They sell these through to companies
like Anthroplogie, Cedar & Lily Clothier.
• The olive wood for this cutting board is
harvested entirely within western Turkey.
• Trees are never clear-cut , but are
harvested under two main conditions:
routine pruning, or the need to replant
due to tree death.

Dansk Kobenstyle Blue 2-Quart Baker
• When the Kobenstyle line originally
debuted in 1955, production took place
in Denmark under the specialized
industrial supplier Glud & Marstrand.
• However, by late 1965 to 1966, Dansk
moved its entire enamelware fabrication
operation over to France. This piece was
made in France.
• This style of Dansk was designed in
1956 by Jens Quistgaard.
• This pot was made between 1966 and
the late 1970&#39;s. The backstamp reads
&#34;DANSK INTERNATIONAL DESIGNS LTD
/ IHQ/FRANCE&#34;
• In extremely good condition for a 50+
year old cooking pot! No breaks, cracks,

• Cathi Jefferson&#39;s career began in 1974
with Herman-Venema, in Matsqui, BC.

Montana, (1997 / 2006, and the other at
Banff (2000 / 2005), Maine. (1997), Japan

• Gordon has progressed in Sogetsu and
now holds the rank of Komon.

Vincent Massey - Copper Red Glazed Bowl

Quirky Bird Bank
•  have not been able to find out any
information about this potter.
• From the style, type of clay, and glaze
used, this piece was made between 1960
and 1980.
• The bird bank has an
&#34;oatmeal&#34; glazed
exterior. The clay is an iron rich
stoneware clay, so when a white or
cream glaze is applied on top, the iron in
the clay seeps through to create the colour.
• The potter applied a heavier glaze over
the wings and head, and &#34;rubbed&#34; away
the glaze on the rest of the body to
create the contrast.
• The interior is also glazed, so the piece
could be used for a bank or a flower
vase.
• Fired to cone 10 in a gas kiln.
• In excellent condition, no cracks,

signature on this piece, so I have not
been able to discover who the potter is
that made this sculpture, but believe they
are from BC.
• This is a very clever piece, if a bit
&#34;prickly&#34;! Not sure if it&#39;a a box, or two
separate pieces, possibly candlesticks?
• Hand formed, pierced, altered, and clay
slip to make the pointy bits.
• An amazing amount of work. The top,
or one of the two pieces has 3 added
urchin type forms.
• The exterior has a clear glaze, the
interior has no glaze.
• I believe that this is porcelain fired to
cone 10 in a gas kiln, as the clay itself is
translucent!

• Martha James is potter, working in her
Quadra Island studio, where she has
been working with husband, Gordon
James, since 1979.
• She has a BFA Univ. of Calgary, and
studied art in Florence, and Banff.
• In 1984 Martha&#39;s entry of dinner ware
was a finalist for a national competition
&#34;The Perfect Setting
• Creamer: This is made with porcelain
clay, decorated with spring like flowers
and leaves on the exterior, and a deep
cobalt blue on the interior. Fired to cone
10 in a gas kiln with a clear glaze on top.
• Shaker: This is thrown with a cream
coloured stoneware clay. The bottom
half thrown, and the upper section hand
molded. Martha used cobalt oxide for
the decoration, and fired to cone 10 in a
gas kiln with a celadon glaze on top.

Sue Hopper/Hara - Yunomi Cup/Bowl
• Sue Hopper, now Sue Hara studied
ceramics in England before immigrating
to Canada in 1968.
• They set up the Chosin Pottery in 1977
• She was an original member of the
collective FIRED UP, Contemporary
Works in Clay (1984), and her work can
be found in the 2009 FIRED UP catalogue.
• She is known for her fine porcelain
throwing, and delicate hand modelling.
Her work was represented in the AGGV
2012 Back to the Land, Exhibition.
• This piece is porcelain with copper red
&#34;spray blooms&#34;, and overlay, I believe
with chrome in a leaf/vine design.
• Cone 10 gas fired reduction
atmosphere. And she has signed with a
&#34;SH&#34; on the base. I believe this was
made in the late 1970&#39;s or early 1980&#39;s.

Japanese Mingei-Style Handleless Cup
• There&#39;s no chop mark, but a possible
signature &#34;MAN&#34;, or it may just be
scratches or designs.
• Hakeme Brushing: The white
background isn&#39;t a solid dipped glaze; it
is broad, visible white slip swept onto the
raw clay using a coarse, traditional straw
brush. You can clearly see the individual
bristle textures sweeping diagonally
across the form.
• Sgraffito & Splashing: The iron-rich
black glaze patch is layered over the slip,
punctuated by parallel vertical sgraffito
lines scratched directly through to the
clay body near the base.
• Dark greyish stoneware clay was fired
to cone 6 in an electric kiln. No
overglaze was applied, so a matte finish.
• In excellent condition, no cracks,

In the 1970&#39;s he spent two years training
intensely under the ceramic pioneer Luke
Lindoe in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
• Walter Dexter was his ceramics teacher
at the Kootenay School of Art in the
1970&#39;s with the Jam Factory Pottery
Collective.
• In 1974, he relocated to Victoria where
he worked alongside Walter Dexter.
• Art moved onto painting in the 1990&#39;s.
• This is thrown forming a &#34;half moon&#34;
shape with a narrowed neck at the top.
He has added decoration, and sgraffito
designs in an asymmetrical fashion.
• An semi-matte glaze over all, with black
iron oxide on the decorated sections.

Meg Burgess - Two Wine Goblets
• Meg Burgess trained at Camberwell
School of Art in London. Some of her
teachers were Colin Pearson, Lucy Rie,
Hans Coper and Bryan Newman.
• Meg and her husband Allan Burgess,
set up the Caeathro Pottery in North
Wales in 1973, and in 1982 came to
Canada settled in Comox and set up
Little River Pottery.
• These are hand thrown goblets. She
used a wax resist technique with the
glazes with tomaku on top, and
“cream&#34; glaze underneath.
• This is a buff coloured stoneware clay,
fired in a gas kiln to cone 10.

• Linda Buhlmann is recognized as a
highly skilled Alberta ceramic artist
• Buhlmann was a child living in Germany
throughout WWII.
• She joined the Edmonton Pottery Guild
in the 1960&#39;s, and pottery became her
main focus for 16 hours a day for about
35 years.
• Iron speckled stoneware clay that
expresses itself in the &#34;Mustarde&#34;
coloured glaze. A wax resist technique
that was used by many potters in the
1970&#39;s and 1980&#39;s.
• The style has similarities to Linda
Mackie, Robin Righton.

Hand Carved Bison - MCM Period
• Because of the type of detailing of the
ears and the tail, I believe tis is most
likely from Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec.
• This is a detailed chisel and carved
textured Bison with the animal&#39;s distinct
heavy shoulder hump, shaggy front coat,
head, and curved horns. I believe it is
made out of a soft wood like pine or fir.
• There is a small “plastic&#34; peg in the tail
which originally had horsehair attached
to act as the &#34;switch tail&#34;
• Note that the ears and the horns were
made separately, and glued on, as the
original grain of the wood might have
snapped or broken.
• This piece is not signed, but is in very
good condition, no cracks or
breaks, or chips, but missing the hair on
