B) - Meiji Period Japanese Imari Porcelain Plate • This is an antique Japanese Imari porcelain plate, a style originating from Arita, Japan, and historically exported from the port of Imari. The style and typical design traits dates to the Meiji period the early Meiji Era (1868-1890), because the back of the plate is unmarked, which changed in 1891 due to the McKinley Tariff Act. • The design relies on the signature Somewari style, dominated by underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze rust/ iron red, and vibrant green accents. • This piece is a standard 19th-century Japanese dessert/salad plate featuring a low, shallow profile typical of the era. • This piece is wheel thrown, then pressed into a mold to create the slight scollop shape, and then the foot is hand trimmed on the potters wheel. • The cobalt oxide was hand painted onto the raw clay, and fired in the kiln, then the various coloured enamels were painted on, and the piece was fired again. • In very good condition, no cracks, breaks, or chips, but some enamel has flaked off.
