Antique "Meiji" Japanese Kutani Eggshell Porcelain Teacups & Saucers • These teacups were made in Kaga Province, an area that encompasses modern-day Kaga City and Nomi City in Ishikawa Prefecture, located along the coast of the Sea of Japan. • One set has matching signatures for the cup and saucer for the Akiyama workshop. The characters read: # (Aki) - Autumn IL (Yama) - Mountain # (Sei) - Made by / Manufactured • The other cup has two different signatures for the cup and saucer. The saucer is by Oda Jinzo Shoten PI). 4# (Oda), I (Ta) # (Sei). Together, "K#H*" translates strictly to "Made by Oda". The cup was made by Watada Tokuji (44*). 47 (Wata) - Cotton (H (Da / Ta) - Rice field, E (Ga / Kaku)- Painted by / Drawn by Together, "HE" translates directly to "Painted by Watada. • These were made in Japan during the Meiji period (1867-1912). • These sets features intricate hand- painted designs, including many types of butterflies, and accented with gold. • Because these are each individually hand painted there are a variety of forms, styles, and positions of the various butterflies. • This type of porcelain is known for its translucency, and is referred to as "eggshell" porcelain. • One set in excellent condition no cracks or breaks, or chips.
