Released in 1971, this historic release marked the very first album issued on the band's own Rolling Stones Records label. It remains a cornerstone of any serious rock or vinyl collection. Production note: because the heavy metal teeth and pull of the zippers pressed into other albums during shipping and caused massive dents, the record label spent immense money altering the packaging. This original design was quickly phased out, making a clean COC 59100 copy rare. The zipper on this album is fully functional. Distribution note: Initially, early 1971 Canadian copies of Sticky Fingers were manufactured by Kinney Music of Canada, Ltd., but Kinney changed its name to WEA Music of Canada later that same year. Because they utilized leftover initial stock components, early Canadian WEA copies can have the imported US "Cort" branded metal zippers. Canadian first-batch pressings are highly valued for their rich sound profile and excellent vinyl weight. Collectors often seek out these early Canadian variants because the pressings are often cleaner than mass-produced US copies from the same era. Andy Warhol cover notes: This album cover was designed by Andy Warhol. The close-up design features iconic Factory actor Joe Dallesandro rather than Mick Jagger. Dropping the mechanical metal zipper reveals a print of cotton underwear beneath it, a legendary piece of interactive pop art. The partnership with Mick Jagger began after a high-society party in New York City in the spring of 1969. Although Jagger warned Warhol of the functional limits of vinyl manufacturing in a letter, Warhol ignored this and proceeded with one of the most physically complicated and expensive assembly-line designs in rock history. Warhol's artistic vision was driven by specific motifs typical of his work at The Factory namely, interactive pop art (he wanted the album to be highly tactile and experiential to "undress" the cover), the innuendo of title, and mass production vs fine art (intentionally using his high-contrast Polaroid photography style to mimic commercial advertisement prints, turning mass-market denim into high-art interactive sculpture). This copy comes with the album's original custom inner sleeve: featuring the famous black-and-white group photograph of the band shot by Peter Webb. The reverse side features the very first album appearance of the lips and tongue logo designed by John Pasche. Art director Craig Braun specifically designed this sleeve to act as a protective layer. It sits directly behind the metal zipper to prevent the heavy zipper teeth from pressing into the vinyl. Because these sleeves were frequently thrown away or split at the seams over the last few decades, having the original insert intact significantly preserves the maximum collector value. Musical milestone: This album is highly valued as the true studio debut of Mick Taylor on lead guitar and the absolute introduction of the world-famous Lips and Tongue logo.
