Bidding starts in 0d 2h 8m

Offered for sale is a captivating work by Walter Jackson Coucill (1915–1982), the celebrated mid-century painter, printmaker, and illustrator remembered for his evocative portrayals of Canadian rural life, historic architecture, wilderness landscapes, and maritime scenery. Born in New Jersey to English parents, Coucill immigrated to Canada in 1924 and became a gifted commercial display designer. Among his notable achievements were the iconic animated Christmas window displays created for Toronto’s Simpson’s Department Store. Following a life-changing heart attack in 1964, he left commercial advertising and devoted himself entirely to fine art. Travelling from coast to coast, Coucill documented Canada through beautifully detailed watercolours and distinctive pen-and-ink studies. His celebrated “Landmarks of Canada” imagery captured pioneer buildings, rural barns, pristine snowscapes, and coastal communities—preserving the country’s architectural and natural heritage with remarkable sensitivity. Coucill’s work became a familiar presence in Canadian homes and corporate offices throughout the 1970s. His artistic legacy is further distinguished by representation in important Canadian institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Archives, the University of Toronto, and the Supreme Court of Ontario. More than decorative artwork, this piece represents a meaningful chapter in Canadian cultural history. It is an exceptional opportunity for collectors of Canadian art, historic architecture, and timeless rural imagery to acquire a work connected to one of the country’s respected documentary artists. A sophisticated and historically significant addition to any home, office, gallery wall, or Canadian art collection. Serious inquiries are welcome.
