Lot #1: Antique Late Georgian c 1780-1830 Painted Bow-fronted Hanging Corner Cabinet or Cupboard. Painting on doors.

A Late Georgian painted bow-fronted hanging corner cabinet. Dating from the late C18th/Early C19th. The curved doors have the original painting on them. Molded plinth to top and bottom. Original butterfly hinges on the doors. A functional light duty antique cabinet full of character. The Painting : originates from a famous ancient story recorded by Herodotus and was a popular subject in Baroque art. Queen Tomyris of the Massagetae defeated and killed the Persian king Cyrus the Great in 530 BC, then plunged his severed head into a vessel of human blood to avenge her son's death. the painting depicts the "Head of Cyrus brought to Queen Tomyris; the queen standing on a dais underneath a canopy at right, followed by servants and her train supported by two boys, while looking down at Cyrus' head, which is being dipped into a vessel with blood at centre, soldiers and wise men onlooking at left, a dog in lower right, twisted columns in background." The painting is after a 1623 Painting by Peter Paul Rubens, and further more, specifically a Flemish print made after that painting by: Paulus Pontius in 1630. You can see the print on the British Museum website. The doors open and close freely, with a couple of hinges loosely attached. A number of the tiny brass nails are missing in some of the hinge nail holes - see hinge close up for example. The two left top and bottom door internal locks present and working - see photograph. The door middle lock and escutcheon are not present. The right door bows out a bit towards the top, not affecting use. The doors overlap fine. The bottom plinth sits at a slight angle, not affecting use when hung and mounted, the cabinet otherwise sits vertically - see photograph. This cabinet has had various repairs over it's life. Two of the bottom shelf interior boards have been replaced with oak boards at some point - see photograph. Dimensions are 22 1/2" wide x 34 1/2" tall. The two 90 degree sides measure 15 1/2" each.
