Fascinating collection of four antique small boxes with wonderful old-world character, unusual construction and decorative detailing. Likely originally made for snuff, tobacco, jewelry or other small personal items. The collection includes a striking footed rectangular box with richly mottled tortoiseshell-style exterior panels, metal banding, small central cartouche, push-button closure and vivid blue patterned interior; a curved wooden box accented with a dark mottled decorative panel and delicate light-colored floral inlay; a handsome black box with contrasting border and central geometric inlay; and an especially primitive curved wooden box showing extensive hand wear and age patina. These are the kinds of small personal objects that become increasingly appealing with age—the wear, old hinges, handmade construction and surviving decorative details tell their own story. Particularly attractive displayed together as a collection.
