19.5" x 30" A Taos drum is a handmade drum crafted by Native American artisans from Taos Pueblo in New Mexico, using natural and renewable materials. The creation process spans over a year, beginning with soaking rawhide to make it pliable, then stretching it tightly over a wooden base and securing it with crisscrossed rawhide lacing. Various factors, including the type of wood, the thickness and tightness of the hide, the depth and diameter of the frame, the thickness of the walls, and the environmental conditions, influence the unique tone of each drum. Native American drums are typically made from natural materials that reflect the connection to nature. The drum shells are often crafted from woods like cottonwood, cedar, or pine, while the drumheads are usually made from animal hides such as deer, elk, or cowhide. These materials are chosen for their durability and the unique sound qualities they provide, ensuring each drum has its own distinct voice. These items are from the estate of Dr. Carole Petiet, who is a Psychologist, Registered Nurse, Naturalist, & Expert Mountaineer that, among many feats, led the first American Expedition to Mount Kongur in China as well as hiked to Everest Base Camp. She did so with an all women team, and conducted studies on how high altitudes affected them throughout. This auction is comprised of her fantastic art collection, artifacts from around the world, and all the gear that carried her to such heights.
