Lot #14: Antique W. & T. Avery Birmingham Merchant’s Balance Scale, Iron & Marble, Brass Weights

Exceptional and highly decorative antique W. & T. Avery balance scale from Birmingham, England. A wonderfully substantial and unusual example featuring an ornate cast/wrought iron stand with an elaborately twisted central column, decorative balance beam, suspended brass weighing pan and large white marble weighing platform. The scale bears the W. & T. Avery Birmingham maker’s mark and is accompanied by a selection of original-looking Avery-marked graduated weights, including 1 lb, 2 oz, 1 oz and smaller fractional weights. Please note: The components shown have been assembled together from pieces found together and we have not been able to establish whether the scale is complete or whether every component originally belonged to this particular scale. It is therefore being offered as found, rather than represented as a complete original set. The scale has wonderful age, patina and character throughout, including oxidized iron, aged brass and surface wear to the marble platform. The condition and finish are consistent with a genuine antique working scale rather than a modern decorative reproduction. Whether displayed as an antique weighing instrument, architectural decorative object, or simply as an exceptional conversation piece, this is an unusually handsome and distinctive piece.
