"Reagan's Place" (Recto) / "Untitled Figure Study" (Verso) LOT OVERVIEW & DESCRIPTION Artist (Recto): Sally Glanville (Canadian, 20th Century) Artist (Verso): M. Menzies (Canadian School, 20th Century) Title (Recto): Reagan’s Place Title (Verso): Untitled (Seated Male Figure Study) Medium: Double-sided work on paper. Recto: Fine art screenprint. Verso: Original mixed media (graphite/charcoal and watercolor/gouache washes). Date: Circa 1978 Edition: Rare limited edition, 4/17 (Recto) Signatures: Hand-signed in pencil by Sally Glanville on the lower right margin (Recto); hand-signed in pencil by M. Menzies on the lower right margin (Verso). Dimensions: 29.75x23" Auction Catalogue Essay & Provenance This highly unique lot offers a fascinating window into mid-century Canadian studio camaraderie, material reuse, and process art history. The primary side (Recto) presents Reagan’s Place, a beautifully structured, scarce contemporary landscape screenprint by Toronto artist Sally Glanville. Featuring an exceptionally tight edition of only 17 impressions worldwide, the print showcases her signature mastery of stylized topography, layering textured foregrounds and geometric patterns against a striking pioneer hillside homestead and a hidden ridge cemetery motif. The reverse side (Verso) uncovers an unexpected, entirely distinct historical artifact. Prior to Glanville pulling her edition on the sheet, the premium heavy rag paper was used as a life-drawing matrix by studio contemporary M. Menzies, who executed a raw, highly expressive, and angular male figure study rendered in loose charcoal lines and muted watercolor washes. Given Sally Glanville's long-standing, prolific historic association with Open Studio in Toronto—one of Canada's most celebrated artist-run contemporary print centers—it was incredibly common for regional studio peers to trade, inherit, or recycle clean sheets of luxury European printing paper. This specimen beautifully preserves the creative trace of two separate artists on a single physical plane, elevating it from a standard edition print into a notable collaborative artifact of 1970s Canadian printmaking culture. Condition Report Recto: Screenprint inks remain rich and well-preserved. Minor age-related paper buckling and mild rippling near borders consistent with localized humidity exposure and vintage framing tension. Verso: Original drawing displays sharp graphite lines and stable watercolor washes. Paper exhibits some historic studio handling marks, corner waves, ripping, loosen paper, minor acidic mat contact along margins. Recommendation: Offered in its vintage silver-toned frame with an earthy-toned mat board. A archival conservation reframing in a double-sided float mount is highly recommended to display both unique faces of the sheet securely Nearest intersection Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue Dimensions: 29.75x23" Pickup category timeslot {A}
