Rare Early Period Debbie O’Rourke Wood Carving & Pyrography Panel – "Foetal Humanoid" (1971) DIMENSIONS: 12” x 21” MEDIUM: Hand-carved relief wood slab with pencil/pyrography detailing and painted accents on structural plywood backing. SIGNATURE: Hand-signed and dated "D. O'Rourke '71" on the lower-left facing panel. LOT DESCRIPTION Offered here is an exceptional, historically significant early-career artifact by multi-disciplinary Canadian artist Debbie O’Rourke. Executed in 1971, this striking 12x21" vertical wood panel represents the genesis of O'Rourke's deeply intimate artistic exploration of human biology, pregnancy, and vulnerability. The piece features a stylized, inverted human fetal figure masterfully rendered onto a light-toned canvas. This smooth focal subject is dynamically framed by rich, rustic live-edge texturing. The surrounding surface showcases rigorous hand-tooled gouge work, leaving a heavily sculpted, scalloped pattern that highlights the natural undulations of the organic timber substrate. A natural horizontal checking crack near the top apex underscores its raw, mid-century composition and mid-century aging process. The reverse side preserves structural plywood reinforcement, vintage hanging wire hardware, and O'Rourke’s official mid-career business card featuring her distinct Monarch Butterfly motif. ABOUT THE ARTIST Debbie O’Rourke is an accomplished Canadian painter, writer, and educator whose storied career spans decades across the Toronto art scene. After graduating from the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, O’Rourke settled in Toronto where she refined her meticulous drawing precision by spending over a decade as a factory crest designer in the historic garment district. O'Rourke’s fine art portfolio has always been intensely informed by her real-world experiences as a mother, nursing aide, and palliative care worker. Prompted by a lack of authentic maternal imagery during her own pregnancy, she began producing highly raw, anatomy-forward drawings and sculptures that challenged conservative exhibition spaces. This bold vision eventually led her to coordinate landmark regional showcase movements like the celebrated Birthtales exhibitions in Toronto. Later in her career, O'Rourke achieved widespread recognition for "The Milkweed Patch", a monumental multi-media environmental traveling project utilizing the life cycle of the monarch butterfly to comment on systemic fragility and metamorphosis. CONDITION REPORT Front: Excellent vintage condition. The central illustration remains sharp and clear. Wood exhibits natural, stable horizontal stress splitting (checking) near the top margin consistent with age and drying of thick-cut solid wood art slabs. Reverse: Fully intact artist label, stable plywood backing panel, and secure D-ring mounting cord. nearest intersection Yonge Street and Steeles Dimensions: 12” x 21” Pickup category timeslot {A}
