A vintage mid-century Kaiser Porzellan porcelain bird vase manufactured in West Germany, likely dating between the 1970s and 1980s.Design & ArtistryThe Shape: The vase features a timeless, elegant baluster or amphora silhouette, with a gently swelling body that tapers toward a flared rim and a stable, integrated foot rim.The Subject: The central motif showcases two highly detailed Blue Jays (Cyanocitta cristata) perched amidst textured branches. The vibrant cobalt blue, black, and white plumage of the birds contrasts sharply against the clean, glossy white porcelain glaze background.Foliage Details: The birds are framed by beautiful oak branches bearing realistic dried golden-brown oak leaves, a hallmark aesthetic of European naturalism decorative wares. The artist behind this Kaiser vase is M.G. (Martin Glen) Loates, one of Canada's most celebrated and globally recognized wildlife artists. Artistic Background & Profile Master of Realism: Born in 1945 in Toronto, Ontario, Glen Loates became world-famous for his hyper-realistic watercolor paintings of North American flora and fauna. His style is defined by an extraordinary attention to anatomical detail, texture, and natural behavior, reminiscent of historical naturalists like John James Audubon. First for the White House: Loates holds the unique historical distinction of being the very first Canadian artist ever invited to design a painting specifically for the White House. In 1982, he personally presented his painting of the Bald Eagle to U.S. President Ronald Reagan in the Oval Office. The Royal Connection: His work was highly admired by the British Royal Family. His artwork was officially presented to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and a special portfolio of his paintings was accepted into the private collection of Queen Elizabeth II. The Kaiser Porcelain Collaboration During the 1970s and 1980s, luxury collectibles markets boomed. Kaiser Porzellan (West Germany) partnered with elite global wildlife artists to translate their canvas paintings onto high-end European porcelain. Loates designed a highly successful, limited-edition North American Bird Series for Kaiser. This series included a variety of fine tableware artifacts: The Plates: A sought-after set of 4 limited-edition bird plates capped at 10,000 individually numbered pieces, featuring Cedar Waxwings, Cardinals, Goldfinches, and this specific Blue Jays design.
