While the Royal Mint in London produced the majority of Canada’s currency, it occasionally suffered from production backlogs or lacked capacity. To meet demand, the British government contracted the Heaton Mint—the largest and most prominent private minting facility in the world at the time—to strike several batches of Canadian coins.
