Ivory-tone gypsum lid finished to resemble antique gutta-percha and ivory, high-relief pastoral vignette, dark black gypsum base mimicking ebony, smooth interior, small hand-held size

Victorian-style gutta-percha oval trinket box

Decorative oval box reproduced from an intricately carved Victorian-era photo case. The raised ivory-tone lid depicts a detailed pastoral scene of a young girl resting beneath a tree, surrounded by foliage, birds and a distant cottage, with an elaborate scrolling border.

The accompanying information sheet states that the original Victorian case was of a type popular in America for presenting family scenes and that this reproduction is made in gutta-percha, an early polymer-type material, with cast gypsum components. The contrasting dark base enhances the appearance of the intricately detailed lid.

Includes original informational paper explaining the Victorian source and reproduction.
