Lot #51: Rare Antique 5-Gallon Salt-Glazed Stoneware Crock with Faint Cobalt "Bee Sting / Lazy 8"

Bidding starts in 0d 0h 33m

This is an authentic, late 19th-century North American utilitarian stoneware crock featuring a 5-gallon capacity. The crock features an earthy, tan-to-brown salt-glaze finish with a glossy, lightly pitted texture typical of historic wood or coal-fired kilns. On the front face, the piece displays faint, freehand "bee sting" or "lazy 8" stylized markings, which were swept onto the wet clay by the potter to denote its size. Near the top of these cursive margins, subtle traces of faint blue cobalt slip paint are visible, deeply integrated beneath the thick glaze layer. The upper rim also shows beautiful organic variation, with soft pink and reddish "kiln flashes" caused by uneven oxygen reduction and high heat exposure during the salt-firing process.Equipped with molded lug handles and a beautifully fitted wooden replacement lid, this robust primitive piece carries excellent historical character and represents classic, regional craftsmanship from historic Midwestern or Canadian potteries.
