Lot #6: Antique Chinese soapstone figure of Guanyin

Serene feminine form holding flowers with attendant crane. She wears flowing robes, an elaborate coiffure. The carving is delicate and carefully finished, with well-modelled drapery and a gentle, composed expression. In Chinese iconography, a crane frequently accompanies Guanyin or other deities as a profound symbol of longevity, peace, and spiritual soaring. The intricate, branching shape above its head represents an auspicious pine tree branch or a lingzhi mushroom, which further reinforces the motif of eternal life and good health. It is a substantial, highly detailed example of Chinese export art. Statues of this impressive scale were typically carved from large blocks of dense soapstone, Shoushan stone, or pyrophyllite during the early-to-mid 20th century.
