Lot #233: Vintage Northern Thai Hand-Painted Wooden Keepsake Chest Lanna Folk Art Wat Phumin Temple

This hand-painted wooden box depicts scenes directly adapted from the 19th-century temple murals of Wat Phumin in Nan Province, Northern Thailand (Lanna / Tai Lue tradition). The original temple frescoes—painted in the late 1800s by Tai Lue artist Nan Bua Pun (Thit Buaphan)—are among the most celebrated cultural landmarks in Thailand. Artisans and souvenir workshops in Nan frequently reproduce these iconic figures on hand-painted wooden chests, jewelry boxes, and decorative panels. This box is intricately detailed and bears the hand painted signature of the artist, in the bottom left corner of the front panel (Jiraporn Srisuwan). It's in great shape overall, though there is a crack in the surface running along the top, though it is not at risk of breaking. See pics for dimensions and to see all five painted panels.
