These portraits and frames are classic turn-of-the-century decorative art pieces, dating from circa 1890 to 1910 (late Victorian through the Edwardian era). The Portraits Technique Crayon Prints, these are crayon portraits (also called solar prints or photo enlargements). Photographers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries would lightly print a photo enlargement onto silver halide paper and then employ artists to hand-retouch them using charcoal, pastels, or crayon to give them depth, contrast, and a fine-art appearance. Subjects & Attire: The clothing styles—high-collared blouses for the women and high-lapel suits/ties for the man—align directly with the 1890s to early 1900s. The Wooden Frames Wood & Finish: The dramatic, bold grain on the flat face of the frames is a tiger oak pattern (often quarter-sawn oak) or a faux-finish trompe-l'œil "tiger stripe" lacquer over solid wood, which was wildly popular in North America between 1895 and 1915. Embellishments: The outer border features molded gesso ornate detail (a plaster-like material cast into decorative motifs and glued to the wood frame). The inner border surrounding the image features a gold-gilded, beaded or rope-twist sight edge. Glass Type: Frames of this specific oval style original to this era typically featured convex (bubble) glass rather than flat glass, curved to give depth to the portrait and prevent the delicate charcoal/pastel media from rubbing against the glass pane.
