Lot #341: Roseville Pottery Donatello Jardiniere and Matching Pedestal

An impressive two-piece American art pottery set from Roseville's highly collectible Donatello line, originally introduced in 1916. This set includes a large bulbous jardiniere planter sitting flush upon its matching vertically fluted pedestal stand. Both pieces feature the signature Donatello motif: a deeply molded, low-relief neoclassical frieze depicting playful cherubs and putti lounging amidst trees and scrolled landscapes. The sculptural bands are rendered in a warm cream and tan palette with a contrasting deep russet wash in the background, elegantly framed by a vibrant, softly brushed green and white vertical fluting that defines the upper and lower bodies. True to early production runs for this pattern under the oversight of Frederick Hurten Rhead, these pieces are unmarked. They represent a cohesive, classic example of the Arts and Crafts movement's embrace of Renaissance-inspired decorative themes. There is soe hairline cracks and crazing, see photos.
