1894 Antique Science Hardcover: Studies in Spectrum Analysis by J. Norman Lockyer – 5th Edition, International Scientific Series Vol. XXIII, Fold-Out Plates This is a beautiful antique copy of Studies in Spectrum Analysis by the pioneering English astronomer Sir J. Norman Lockyer. Published in 1894 by Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner, & Co. Ltd. in London, this volume is officially numbered as Volume XXIII (23) of the highly collectible International Scientific Series. The book is bound in the publisher's iconic, deeply embossed red cloth with striking black geometric borders on the front board and bright gilt lettering along the spine. This fifth edition remains a foundational text in astrophysical history, complete with its original text illustrations, detailed full-page spectrum diagrams, and large multi-panel fold-out charts mapping out complex chemical lines. • The Author: Sir J. Norman Lockyer is one of the most influential figures in modern astronomy. He is best known as the co-discoverer of the element helium (which he identified in the solar spectrum before it was ever found on Earth) and as the founder and first editor of the prestigious science journal Nature. This book acts as an accessible window into his exact methodology regarding spectrum photography and astronomical discoveries. • The Publisher & Series: The International Scientific Series (published interchangeably by Appleton in New York and Kegan Paul/King in London) is highly sought after by antique book collectors. The series aimed to bring top-tier, cutting-edge scientific consensus directly to the public, featuring works by Charles Darwin, John Tyndall, and Herbert Spencer. Finding these volumes in their original, crisp uniform red bindings is a major goal for scientific library collectors. • The Edition: While the first edition was published in 1878, this 1894 Fifth Edition represents the mature state of late-Victorian spectroscopy text. It is especially appreciated by collectors because it retains the elaborate, fragile fold-out lithograph spectrum plates that are frequently torn, stained, or completely missing in other surviving copies.
