Beautifully preserved two-volume matching hardcover set by the notable Latvian author Edgars Ardenss, printed in the United States by the specialized diaspora publishing house Tilts (Tilta Apgāds) in Minneapolis. Both volumes feature original mid-century graphic dust jackets with cover artwork designed by Voldemārs Ozoliņš. Books Included in This Lot: • "Svētais un septiņi dēmoni" (The Saint and Seven Demons) – Published in 1966. Subtitled as a "Renaissance-era novel" (Renesanses laika romāns). • "Serafima spārni" (Wings of Serafima) – Published in 1967. A compilation featuring the author's short stories and novellas (Noveles un stāsti). • The "Trimda" (Diaspora) Diaspora Context: Following World War II and the Soviet occupation of the Baltic states, thousands of Latvian intellectuals, writers, and artists fled to the West. This era of literature is known as Trimda literature. Because printing Latvian books was restricted or heavily censored in the Soviet homeland, diaspora communities established independent publishing houses abroad to preserve their native language and culture. • The Publisher (Tilts): Based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Tilts (Tilta Apgāds) was one of the most prominent emigre publishing platforms of the mid-to-late 20th century. They printed books in very limited batches strictly for the scattered global Latvian diaspora, meaning surviving copies in good condition are inherently scarce. • The Author (Edgars Ardenss): Born Eduards Gulbis (1887–1977), Ardenss was an accomplished classical language educator and writer who fled Latvia in 1944, eventually settling in the United States. Known for writing vivid historical fiction detailing intense psychological conflicts and historical figures, these two late-career books represent a vital window into his life in exile.
