Lot #10: Rare 1969 Latvian Book: "ROBEŽA" by Alberts Bels – Tilta Apgāds First Edition

Title: Robeža (Noveles, Stāsti, Romāns) Author: Alberts Bels Publisher: Tilta Apgāds (Minneapolis, USA) Year of Publication: 1969 Language: Latvian Format: Hardcover with original dust jacket Content: A definitive collection featuring the psychological novellas, short stories, and a novel by one of Latvia's most celebrated modern writers. • The Author (Alberts Bels): Alberts Bels is widely regarded as a titan of 20th-century Latvian psychological fiction. Writing during the Soviet occupation era, Bels became famous for embedding deep existential themes, subtle political critique, and complex psychological portraits into his narratives. Having an early edition of his compiled work from this period is highly desirable for collectors of Baltic literature. • The Publisher (Tilta Apgāds): This book was published in Minneapolis by Tilta Apgāds, a prominent exile ("trimda") publishing house established by the Latvian diaspora community in the United States. Exile publications like this were printed in limited quantities specifically to preserve authentic Latvian culture and language outside the reach of Soviet censorship. Because these books were banned or tightly restricted in Soviet-occupied Latvia at the time, surviving copies are scarce and hold high historical value. • Language & Cultural Value: Entirely written in Latvian, this volume is an excellent cultural artifact of the post-WWII Western diaspora literary movement. It features striking minimalist cover art credited on the back jacket to Jānis Gorsvāns, another notable figure in the diaspora art and literary scene. Pickup category timeslot {A}
