1968 hardcover edition of Dzelzs dūre (Iron Fist) written by the celebrated Latvian author Anna Brigadere. This book features the sub-text "1917.–1918. g. piezīmes", collecting Brigadere's raw, poignant documentary notes, personal reflections, and historical sketches of Latvia during the chaotic and traumatic final years of World War I. This specific edition was published in Minneapolis by Tilta apgāds under the direction of Hugo Skrastiņš, and features elegant interior vignette illustrations by the noted diaspora artist Ojārs Jēgens. The book is bound in its striking original grey cloth boards with stylized gold guilt ornamentation on both the spine and the front panel. Condition: Very Good. Crisp, clean pages with tight binding and minimal shelf wear to the decorated cloth boards. An exceptional specimen for any collector of Baltic history or mid-century exile press literature. • The Publisher (Diaspora Press): This book is a significant artifact of Latvian Exile (Trimda) literature. Following the Soviet occupation of the Baltic states, thriving refugee communities established independent publishing houses abroad to preserve free Latvian culture. Tilta apgāds based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, was one of the premier publishers of this movement, printing high-quality cultural works that were strictly banned behind the Iron Curtain. • The Author: Anna Brigadere (1861–1933) is a foundational pillar of Latvian literature, widely recognized for her beloved fairy-tale plays like Sprīdītis and her autobiographical trilogies. Dzelzs dūre showcases her versatility as a historical chronicler, masterfully capturing the tragic plight of the Latvian Riflemen and the bleakness of the German military occupation. • Language & Cultural Value: Written entirely in Latvian, publications from this era served as a vital cultural lifeline. Because press numbers for exile publishers were highly restricted and intended solely for the global Latvian diaspora network, surviving copies in clean condition remain scarce.
