An exceptional lot of three rare Latvian-language historical novels written by the foundational Latvian realist author Augusts Deglavs. This collection spans a fascinating period of 20th-century history, featuring a rare post-WWII Displaced Persons (DP) camp edition printed under post-war military oversight, alongside two later mid-century exile editions published in the West. Included Volumes • Rīga: Patrioti (Part I) • Author: Augusts Deglavs (Abridged edition by A. Baumanis) • Publisher: Apgāds "Tēvzeme", Hanava (Hanau, Germany), 1947 • Significance: A highly collectible post-WWII Displaced Persons (DP) camp edition. The copyright page explicitly states: "Published under Military Government Information Control Permit Nr. 3. Printed by: Druckerei Otto Lembeck, Frankfurt a. M. und Butzbach." Softcover with an illustrated dust jacket depicting old Riga. • Zeltenīte (Romāns) • Author: Augusts Deglavs • Publisher: Tilta Apgāds, Minneapolis, USA, 1968 • Significance: A beautiful, well-preserved hardcover edition with its original illustrated dust jacket designed by Ojārs Jēgens. Printed by the premier Latvian exile publishing house. • Liesma (Romāns) • Author: Augusts Deglavs • Publisher: Tilta Apgāds, Minneapolis, USA, 1970 • Significance: Hardcover with vibrant yellow and white pictorial dust jacket (also designed by Ojārs Jēgens). Serves as a thematic companion to Zeltenīte. Collector's Historical Notes • The Author: Augusts Deglavs (1862–1922) was a monumental figure in Latvian literature. His epic works chronicled the rise of the Latvian national identity, the burgeoning middle class, and the rapid transformation of Riga at the turn of the 20th century. • The 1947 DP Camp Printing: The copy of Rīga is an artifact of Baltic exile history. Following WWII, hundreds of thousands of Latvians lived in Displaced Persons camps in Allied-occupied Germany. Despite severe shortages, they established printing presses to keep their culture alive. This copy was printed in Hanau under strict Allied Military Government permits. • The Publisher (Tilta Apgāds): Based in Minneapolis, Tilts ("The Bridge") was one of the most prominent Latvian diaspora publishing houses. They provided high-quality literature to refugees who fled Soviet occupation, ensuring the preservation of the Latvian language and heritage in the West. Pickup category timeslot {A}
