Lot #14: Rare Latvian Diaspora Books: 2 Novels by Haralds Eldgasts (Tilta Apgāds, 1962 & 1968

An exceptional offering for collectors of Baltic literature and diaspora history: a two-volume set of novels by the notable Latvian author Haralds Eldgasts, published in exile by the renowned Tilta Apgāds in Minneapolis. This lot includes: 1. Zvaigžņotās naktis (1962): A clean hardcover edition with a beautifully patterned grey and gold spine. 2. Sudrabotā saulē (1968): A two-part novel featuring its striking, original illustrated dust jacket designed by the prominent Latvian artist Alfreds Jaunzems. The jacket flap contains the original summary detailing the novel's focus on love, patriotism, and the rustic intellectual life of Latvian youth. Both volumes are entirely intact, featuring clean text blocks and tight bindings, showing only minor age-related toning. • The Publisher (Tilta Apgāds): Operating out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Tilta Apgāds was one of the premier post-WWII Latvian exile publishing houses. Books produced by this press are highly sought after by institutions and private collectors preserving the cultural heritage of the Latvian diaspora during the Soviet occupation. • The Author (Haralds Eldgasts): Eldgasts (the pen name of Jānis Miķelsons, 1882–1926) was an important early 20th-century decadent and romantic writer. Because his career was cut short, his bibliography is limited, making these mid-century diaspora reprints vital for completing collections. • Cover Artistry: The dust jacket for Sudrabotā saulē is signed by Alfreds Jaunzems, a noted diaspora painter and graphic artist. Finding these fragile paper dust jackets intact significantly elevates the collectible value. • Language & Rarity: Written entirely in Latvian, these editions were printed in limited quantities specifically for the scattered global exile community, making them increasingly difficult to find in good condition today.
