historically significant, complete 4-book collection of works by the celebrated Latvian novelist and military officer, Aleksandrs Grīns. This single-lot auction features his monumental three-volume masterpiece, Dvēseļu putenis (Blizzard of Souls), combined with his notable short story and novella collection, Sauciens naktī (A Call in the Night). Written entirely in the original Latvian language, this lot represents a phenomenal capsule of mid-century Baltic exile history and classic military fiction. Lot Contents • Dvēseļu putenis (Volumes I, II, & III) – Complete 1948 Trilogy Set: Published by Jaunā Vārda Apgāds. This epic historical work details the tragic heroism of the Latvian Riflemen (Strēlnieki) during World War I and the fights for independence. • Sauciens naktī (1968): Published by Tilta Apgāds, featuring a collection of Grīns' gripping shorter prose works. • Post-WWII DP Camp Provenance: The 1948 edition of Dvēseļu putenis carries deep historical importance. It was printed in Delmenhorst, Germany at the printing house of Siegfried Rieck under British Military Government Authority ("Authorized by Mil. Gov."). This set was specifically manufactured for Latvian refugees living in European Displaced Persons (DP) camps following World War II, keeping Baltic literary culture alive while the Soviet regime banned these texts in the homeland. • The Martyred Author: Aleksandrs Grīns (1895–1941) was a decorated WWI veteran. Due to his nationalist viewpoints, he was arrested by the NKVD and executed in Astrakhan in 1941. Because his literature was strictly forbidden and destroyed in Soviet-occupied Latvia until the restoration of independence, Western exile printings like these were the only surviving lifelines to his work for decades. • Authentic Diaspora Artwork: The lot highlights distinct Baltic graphic arts of the era. The Dvēseļu putenis trilogy features striking cover illustrations by Kārlis Sātiņš, while Sauciens naktī is adorned with authentic wood carvings (kokgriezumi) by Jānis Plēpis.
