Lot #20: Rare Complete 8-Volume Set of "Dzimtene" by Jēkabs Janševskis – Latvian Diaspora Edition

Rare, complete 8-volume hardcover set of the monumental epic novel Dzimtene (Homeland), written by the celebrated Latvian author Jēkabs Janševskis. This specific set was printed sequentially between 1969 and 1974 by the historic diaspora publishing house Tilta Apgāds (Tilts), based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bound in vibrant teal-green cloth, the spines feature traditional Baltic geometric motifs alongside clean Roman numerals (I–VIII). The set preserves the classic mid-century typography and contains the original text illustrations by renowned Latvian artists, including E. Brencēns, A. Apsītis, and I. Zeberiņš. The cover design across the volumes is credited to Ojārs Jēgens. • The Author: Jēkabs Janševskis (1865–1931) is one of Latvia’s primary cultural chroniclers. His magnum opus, Dzimtene, is a massive historical and ethnographic panorama detailing the complex social tapestry, folklore, traditions, and rural life of the Kurzeme (Courland) region during the late 19th century. • The Diaspora Publisher: Following WWII, major pillars of Latvian literary culture shifted abroad due to the Soviet occupation. Tilta Apgāds (operated by Andris Mālītis) became one of the most important diaspora institutions in the United States, dedicated to preserving uncensored Latvian literature and heritage for exiles worldwide. • Language & Rarity: Entirely written in Latvian, complete multi-volume sets published in exile are increasingly difficult to source in uniform, well-preserved condition. Finding all eight volumes together—spanning the staggered 5-year printing timeline—makes this a premier acquisition for collections of Baltic history, diaspora printing, or European literature.
