Lot #32: Rare 1965 Latvian Diaspora: "Apburtā pilsēta" (The Enchanted City) by Augusts Mežsets

Beautifully preserved, hardcover copy of the historical novel "Apburtā pilsēta" (The Enchanted City) written by the prominent Latvian author Augusts Mežsēts. Published in 1965 by the renowned diaspora publishing house Tilta Apgāds, this volume is a key piece of 20th-century Latvian exile literature. • The Author: Augusts Mežsēts (1890–1977) was a highly respected Latvian writer, translator, and independent publisher. Apburtā pilsēta (originally published in Riga in 1929) is the celebrated opening installment of his masterpiece trilogy, "Baltā kvēle" (The White Glow). • The Publisher & Historical Context: This book is a product of Tilta Apgāds, a highly influential publishing entity operated by the post-WWII Latvian exile community based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During the Soviet occupation of Latvia, diaspora presses like Tilts were vital in preserving free Latvian culture, printing classic and contemporary works that were otherwise banned or censored in the homeland. • Linguistic Rarity: Printed entirely in the Latvian language, books from this specific exile era were printed in highly limited runs intended strictly for the displaced Baltic diaspora worldwide, making well-kept copies relatively scarce today.
