Lot #39: 1964 Latvian Exile Literature: "Aizliegtā dziesma" by Hugo Puriņš (Tilts, Minneapolis)

Beautifully preserved hardcover copy of Aizliegtā dziesma (The Forbidden Song) by Latvian author Hugo Puriņš. Published in 1964 by the prominent diaspora publishing company Tilts (Tilta Apgads) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This volume is a collection of short stories and novellas (stāsti un noveles) written entirely in the Latvian language. • The Publisher (Tilts): For collectors of Cold War-era diaspora history, the Tilts publishing house is highly significant. Following the Soviet occupation of the Baltic states during WWII, thousands of Latvian intellectuals fled to western countries. Tilts became one of the premier exile publishing houses based in North America, dedicated to keeping Latvian language, history, and independent culture alive outside the USSR. • The Author (Hugo Puriņš): Hugo Puriņš (1921–1977) was a prominent Latvian exile writer and poet. His works in Aizliegtā dziesma are highly sought after by niche cultural collectors because they frankly explore the psychological reality, tragic turns, and everyday struggles of Latvian soldiers and refugees adapting to wartime and displacement—themes strictly censored inside Soviet-occupied Latvia at the time. • Linguistic Scarcity: Books published in Latvian during this mid-century exile window were printed in small, limited runs primarily intended for a tight-knit global diaspora network. Finding them intact with original gold gilt spine printing makes them excellent additions to global Baltic literature and historical collections. Pickup category timeslot {A}
