Beautifully preserved collection of six Latvian-language literary works written by the prominent exile author Jānis Sarma and issued by the legendary diaspora publisher Tilta apgāds (Tilts) between 1959 and 1968. The volumes feature striking, uniform gilt-embossed hardcover bindings and original dust jacket art by noted Latvian diaspora artist Voldemārs Kalniņš (V. Kalniņa vāks), representing the high-quality aesthetic production typical of postwar Latvian intellectual circles in North America. Included Titles & Publication Dates: • Gadsimteņi (Vēsturiski stāsti / Historical Stories) – 1959 • Trejdeviņi meži (Stāsti un noveles / Stories and Novellas) – 1964 • Mīlestības māksla (Noveles un stāsti / Novellas and Stories) – 1965 • Sālemas ķēniņš (Romāns / Novel) – 1966 • Kā Daugava vaida (Romāns / Novel) – 1967 • Rotaļa bez noteikumiem (Romāns / Novel) – 1968 • The Author: Jānis Sarma (pseudonym of Jānis Kalniņš, 1884–1983) was an important voice in Latvian exile literature. Having fled Latvia during World War II, his works frequently explored historical themes, national identity, and the bittersweet experiences of the diaspora, making his first-edition exile prints highly valued by cultural historians. • The Publisher: Tilta apgāds (operating out of Minneapolis, USA, and run by Hugo Skrastiņš) was a premier cultural institution for Latvians abroad. They took immense pride in high-production values, meaning these books were not just text, but deliberate pieces of art designed to preserve Latvian culture while the homeland was under Soviet occupation. • Language & Rarity: Written entirely in Latvian, these editions were printed in limited quantities specifically for the scattered global network of Latvian refugees and emigrés. Finding a clean, multi-year chronological run of Sarma's work with original design elements intact is uncommon. Pickup category timeslot {A}
